Some apparent anomalies in Niven's "Protector". This was a fun story no matter which format you use. Niven is able to cover action and themes, and development in one book which present day writers would take multiple books to cover. The audio book gave life to the story which you would miss reading the book. Are you willing to kill your mentor or die to allow your student to survive at the cost of your life? Is planetary genocide an option. The big question Niven explores is what is ethical behaviors valid when the life of your planet is at stake? Is it ok to convince the enemy to attack innocents on another world to protect your world. The space science fiction stuff is really window dressing for a morality play. The Pak live near the galactic core and travel by sub-light Bussard Ram spaceships. This is story of Brennan the Belter and Phssthpok the Pak. The story takes place in universe in which humans have settled the solar system and planets around Alpha Centauri. This is one of his early works written 1974 and made into an audiobook in 2004. Larry Niven is an excellent story teller.

I assure myself that even if the show as a whole doesn’t entirely pass muster, it will contain moments to astonish and excite me. It’s a similar feeling to the one I’ve had in the past at new Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein II or Alan Jay Lerner-Frederick Loewe musicals - or, more recently, at a new Stephen Sondheim or William Finn musical. Waiting for Gem of the Ocean to begin and taking in David Gallo’s not-yet illuminated version of a large parlor at 1839 Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill district circa 1904, I realized something that I habitually do in anticipation of whatever is the newest addition to August Wilson’s decade-by-decade cycle of plays about the 20th-century African American experience: I prime myself to relish the collection of full-bodied speeches that I have every reason to believe some or all of the play’s characters will be given. So now my 'master' - the centuries-old yet gorgeously well-preserved Ethan Sullivan - wants me to reconnect with my own upper-class family and act as liaison between humans and vampire. The fact that it's majorly frowned upon by vamp society won't make a difference to that kind of a headline, or a new reporter who's out to impress his family. There's a first-time reporter sniffing around vampire society, and if he uncovers the Raves - mass feeding parties, where vampires round humans up like cattle and drink themselves silly. Don't get me wrong - Joe Public isn't exactly thrilled to be living side by side with the undead, but at least they haven't stormed the castle. Instead, ten months later, we're enjoying celebrity statue and fending off the paparazzi, who are only slightly less dangerous than angry stake-wielding slayers. You'd think a headline like that would have made the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Personally, I think this is the better move. There’d been some debate over the proper reading order for this first chapter - does it work better in chronological order, as the events of New Avengers #1-3 took place before those of Avengers #1-3? Or does it work better thematically to show what seems like a triumph before revealing the truth behind it? This complete collection takes the strong stance of placing Avengers #1-3 before New Avengers #1-3, settling the debate. However, the first portion of this run is interesting - Avengers tells the story of the gathering of the Avengers, the day that the team grew and called upon all its members to assemble, while New Avengers depicted the true motivations of this gathering. These books would remain separate until the final act of the run, when they alternated every issue in what was essentially a months-long crossover called Time Runs Out. Hickman’s Avengers run was split into two main ongoings: Avengers and New Avengers. Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast! |
